KUCHING: Construction of the Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre (SIDC) will commence in the first half of next year.

Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Roland Sagah said RM20 million has been allocated in the State Budget 2023.

“The construction of the SIDC is expected to be completed in 24 months,” he said while winding up for his ministry at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on Tuesday (Nov 29).

Sagah also said SIDC through the Sarawak Research and Development Council (SRDC) has engaged with several world-renowned research institutions such as the United States National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases; Imperial College London; The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute; and Oxford University.

“While not leaving behind very able local institutions of higher learning namely Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS); Curtin University of Technology Malaysia Sarawak; Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak; University Technology Sarawak (UTS), UiTM Sarawak and Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus, we look forward to working together with more world-renowned research centres in the future,” he said.

In another development Sagah acknowledged the difficulties faced by some in caring for and moving bedridden family members.

He said a Sibu based company has now come up with an innovative wheelchair design known as the Wondaleaf Hammock Wheelchair which has been selected as a finalist for the Lexus Design Award 2022 and that the project received initial funding support from SRDC.

Sagah added that the design will revolutionise the use of wheelchairs and help caregivers move patients without manually carrying them.

“The SRDC continues to support the project to enable trials in hospitals,” he said.
