KUCHING: With the amendment of the Oil Mining Ordinance 1958, it will give the State Government more power to regulate its oil and gas resources.

Lingga Assemblywoman Hajah Simoi Haji Peri said in the amendment bill, which included the State Mineral and Mining Authority (SMMA), must be strengthened.

Simoi said this when debating on the Oil Mining (Amendment) Bill 2018 after the bill was read by the Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting , here yesterday.

“The government had won its first round after Petronas lost the suit. But an action plan must be taken to ensure the oil and gas resources are protected,” she stressed.

Therefore to strengthen SMMA, she urged the government to form a 20 to 30 years’ Integrated Master Plan for the oil and gas industry in Sarawak for only with such plan it will provide a clear strategic direction of the oil and gas industry in the State.

“The plan must also include inputs from oil and gas experts and industry players so that the oil and gas industry can be further developed.

“With that we need a clear Blue Print in the oil and gas industry and it needs to be implemented as soon as possible,’ she stressed, adding that she is sure that the people of Sarawak are capable of drafting the plan.

Meanwhile, she also hoped the State Government could employ more local players to be an active part of the oil and gas industry instead of just acting as ‘observers’.
