KUCHING: In line with Sarawak’s commitment to pave the path to sustainable energy, the Utilities Ministry is hosting the International Energy Week (IEW) 2020.

Themed “Energy Growth for Economic Transformation in Digitalisation Age”, the fifth edition will be held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching from Oct 6 to 8 next year.

Speaking at the soft launching of IEW 2020, its minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said it would be the biggest international and petroleum expo and conference in East Malaysia.

“More energy-related digital technologies, application content and ideas are going to be presented and showcased,” he said during the soft launching at the Land Custody and Development Authority Tower yesterday.

He said one of the important aspects from the conference was to learn how to produce quality and sustainable energy.

“By looking at the new development of Indonesia relocating its capital city to East Kalimantan, there is a need to produce quality power and for Sarawak to see how it can position itself to be the top player.

“At the moment, we are providing more than 200 megawatts of power to West Kalimantan. In the future, they will need more, so we have to produce more.

“We have surplus water resources, therefore I believe Sarawak Energy Berhad is in a good position to be able to be produce more hydropower,” he said.

IEW 2020 will feature 150 exhibitors representing 16 countries and an expected 250
delegates and 5,000 visitors.

Also present at the soft launching were Utilities Assistant Ministers Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi (Water Supply) and Datuk Liwan Lagang (Rural Electricity) and AMB Tarsus Exhibitions Sdn Bhd director Andrew Siow.
