KUCHING: Some business premises here have been found using detergent for sanitising the hands of customers.

This was discovered during a joint operation carried out by a team from the Ministry of Health (MoH) to check on recovery movement control order (RMCO) compliance by the business sector, in Gita, Metrocity, Matang Baru and Demak, on Wednesday (June 24).

State Environmental Health chief Billy Sujang said the usage of detergent not only violated the standard operating procedure (SOP) under the RMCO, but also caused harm to customers.

“Detergents are corrosive and poisonous, which is why its usage as a sanitiser is harmful.

“If the business premises want to use other hand wash solutions, make sure there is a sink and tap nearby for the customer to wash their hands properly,” he said in a statement.

According to Billy, the operation on Wednesday (June 24) also issued compounds to six errant business premises for not complying with SOP.

A total of 63 premises were checked comprising 30 eateries, 29 retail outlets and convenience stores, and four barbers and hair salons.

“Among the violations committed included not providing sanitisers, not recording body temperature and particulars of people entering the premises, and also not cleaning, disinfecting or sanitising the premises – offences under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures Within Infected Local Areas) (No.7) Regulations, 2020,” he concluded.

Each compound is fixed at RM1,000. The total value of compounds issued on the day was RM6,000.

The operation involved a total of 44 enforcement personnel comprising 24 from MoH, seven from the Kuching Police District Headquarters, 10 from Kuching North City Council and one each from Malaysian Armed Forces, Civil Defence Force and People’s Volunteers Corps.
