KUCHING: It will be a good compromise if Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob is chosen to be the next prime minister, opines Datuk Peter Minos.

The political analyst describes the former deputy prime minister and Umno vice-president as ‘clean and competent’.

“I think Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (current caretaker prime minister), Bersatu and the rest in Perikatan Nasional will not object but will support,” Minos said on Wednesday (Aug 18).

He hoped that once Ismail Sabri was appointed, there would be no more power struggles and problems at federal level.

“Political squabbles are so troublesome, disturbing, and irritating – bad for all of us in Malaysia.”

He said the new prime minister would have significant tasks at hand, with the top priority being to continue vigorously with the immunisation programme in order to rid the country of Covid-19 as soon as possible.

“Then, step up the economic recovery so that by next year, all will be in full gear.”

Minos said that once the pandemic was over or substantially handled, the general election must be held by early next year.

He explained that as long as the ruling government did not have a good and commanding majority in Parliament, there would always be potential for political conflict.

“There are still power-crazy politicians in Kuala Lumpur who are dying to be prime minister.

“Political troubles the likes of what we have seen in the last few years are not desirable and must be put to a stop. Only a general election can help.”
