TANJUNG MANIS: The Mancong fish or its scientific name Polynemus Indicus Shaw weighing 2.34 kg brought luck to Ismail Gus, 45, who was announced as champion for the Mesei Latik Siri II fishing competition organised by the Iftitah and Resort, here yesterday.
Ismail from Kampung Rajang won RM5,000 as his champion prize.
When speaking to reporters, the father of five said the winning was happy with his luck.
“I do not have high hopes at first when registering for the competition. It’s just a matter to fill up my free time. In my expectation, I never thought I could win such a lucrative prize,” he said.

Coming in second was Mohammad Isa Alias, 38, who landed a Mancong fish weighting 1.58 kg that came with cash prize of RM2, 000.
In third place and winning RM1, 000 cash was Dediantino Asek, who caught a Sembilang fish weighing around 990 grammes.
Khairi Azri Materang and Kristifferson Nyumbang took home RM100 each for the consolation prizes of fourth and fifth places.
Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Assistant Minister Datuk Len Talif Salleh officiated at the fishing contest award ceremony.
Len who is also as Kuala Rajang assemblyman will be funding RM20,000 for the final stages of the competition set to be organised in December this year.
A total of 162 participants signed for the competition this year as compared to 135 last year, said director of Iftitah, Resort and Restaurant Ibnee Ikni when speaking to reporters.
“I am happy, this year the fishing contest was encouraging and well supported. I would like to thank the participants and the crowds for their support,” he said.
Also present at the ceremony was Tanjung Manis District Officer Udin Bujang.
