KUCHING: Pujut assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang said the opposition to the Constitution of the State of Sarawak (Amendment) Bill, 2022 from Democratic Action Party (DAP) and Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) assemblymen was to be expected.

“It is the DAP DNA,” he said when speaking in support of the bill in the State Legislative Assembly yesterday. The bill was later passed by a two-thirds majority with the six opposition members against it.

Yii said the amendment to style the head of government of Sarawak as ‘Premier’ was in line with the recent amendment to the federal constitution.

He pointed out that the recent amendment to the federal constitution had restored the rightful status of Sarawak in the federation of Malaysia –  that Sarawak is one of the three regions – namely federation of Malaya, Sabah and  Sarawak, after the exit of Singapore, that formed the Federation of Malaysia.

“The opposition to the proposed constitutional amendment by YB Padungan and YB Ba’kelalan is to be expected. Especially from YB Padungan. It is the DAP DNA. If we can recall the masquerade of the two Constitutional amendment attempts during Pakatan Harapan government time which were entirely superficial. But when the 18 Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) MPs abstained, they were demonised by PH as traitors to Sarawak,” Yii told the august House.

He said that if PH had succeeded in its attempt; “… their elected representatives would not even be in a position to debate today as there would be no standing to do so.

“Thankfully, the constitution amendment as proposed and pushed by GPS was successful and that’s why we are now in a position to review the federal constitution and examine where it is not in line with the fact that Sarawak is one of the three regions that formed the federation of Malaysia and we should therefore propose to amend both the Sarawak and Federal Constitution where ever and whenever needed and in the spirit of MA 63,” Yii exhorted.
