Flood in Jakarta

JAKARTA: Several areas in the city of Jakarta were flooded today following heavy downpour since last night, affecting the daily activities of more than 10 million residents.

The Indonesian Presidential Palace in Central Jakarta did not escape the deluge, however, the water receded by 7 am this morning.

As of 10 am today, according to the Jakarta Police twitter account @TMCPoldaMetro, several roads in Jakarta, including several access roads to Bekasi and Tengerang, were inaccessible as they were submerged in flood waters up to a metre deep.

Public transport services such as buses and trains were also reported to have been affected by the flooding with the National Electricity Company (PLN) has disconnected the power supply in more than 800 residential areas, in a bid to prevent the risk of electrocution.

Since early January this year, Jakarta has been hit by several floods and flash floods after heavy rains, with the worst incident occurred on Jan 1 which killed more than 60 people, as a result of among others, drowning, electrocution and hypothermia.
