KUCHING: A total of RM2.3 million has been approved by the federal government to upgrade Jalan Batu Kawa, said Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian.
Dr Sim said this involves the installation of a 2.4km concrete barrier costing RM1.8 million as well as a RM500,000 540-metre guard rail along the road.
“With the improvements to safety measures at the black spots along Jalan Batu Kawa, we pray that it will help to reduce the number of traffic accidents there significantly,” he said in a Facebook post last Thursday (March 11).
The Batu Kawa assemblyman also said the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) Sarawak has been asked to study other environmental factors that may contribute to the traffic accidents.
Dr Sim in Sarawak, there are three types of roads under different jurisdictions using different funding.
“There is the federal road under the Public Works Department (PWD) Malaysia and the state road under the Sarawak government — both of which are maintained by PWD Sarawak.
“Then there are the roads under the state government maintained by local councils,” he said.
He thanked Senior Minister (Infrastructure Cluster) Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and the PWD Malaysia for their speedy approval of the Jalan Batu Kawa upgrading project.
“I also thank PWD Sarawak for being the implementing agency as well as involved in the tedious but necessary paperwork for the application of the federal funding,” he said
“I will continue to fight for more federal funding to improve the federal roads especially Jalan Batu Kawa,” he said.
