KUCHING: Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) has urged the relevant authorities to repair the pedestrian overhead bridge with escalator linking at Jalan Rock immediately, as it has been out of service for a year.

Its chairman Chong Chieng Jen said he has received complaints from the public, claiming that they had contacted the state’s Public Works Department (JKR), however, no action has been taken.

He said the reason given by the department was that the bridge, linking Timberland Medical Centre and Third Mile Central Park, was under the purview of the Kuching South City Council (MBKS).

“Whatever reason it could be, I urged the authorities to act immediately,” he said after inspecting the bridge this morning.

The Stampin Member of Parliament (MP) said the construction of the bridge was a noble idea as it provides convenience to the residents around, especially the elderly, as well as patients seeking treatment at the Timberland Medical Centre to safely cross the road.

However, he said, if it was left without any maintenance, even with the escalator not functioning for a year, it was indeed a waste of public funds.

Chong, who is also the Padungan assemblyman, urged the Sarawak government to look into it, as both the state JKR and MBKS were state government agencies.

The RM3 million pedestrian overhead bridge was opened to the public in 2019 before it was officially handed over to MBKS.
