KAPIT: Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat paid a working visit to Rumah Bernabas at Kampung Nanga Serian about 20 minutes boat ride form this town last weekend.

Kampung Nanga Serian is home to an ethnic community known as Tanjung (Melanau) who had moved inland and settled at the river mouth.

There are 31 wooden houses in the village with a population of 245 people. Tuai Rumah Bernabas is its chief. The villagers are mostly farmers and poultry breeders.

The village elders had gathered in Tuai Rumah Bernabas house to meet Jamit where a dialogue session was held.

“I am here today to check on the soil erosion which occurred earlier behind Tuai Rumah Bernabas’ house and also to inspect the construction and completion of an ‘iron bridge’ which I allocated for Nanga Serian. I am very pleased that many heads of households are present,” Jamit said.

The iron bridge was approved by Jamit through the Rural Transformation Project (RTP) Fund amounting to RM200,000 at Nanga Serian for the benefit of the villagers whose only mode of transportation is by longboat to and fro Kapit town.

Jamit also urged the 150 registered voters of Kampung Nanga Serian to support the present GPS-led state government led by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“After the last parliamentary election (GE14), Barisan Nasional (BN) lost to Pakatan Harapan (PH) in Malaya. PH is now the federal government. For us in Sarawak, we left BN to form Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) led by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Open to run the Sarawak government. GPS logo is a Kenyalang. In the upcoming state election due in 2021, GPS is using the Kenyalang logo and the slogan for GPS is Sarawak First, Sarawak our priority,” Jamit explained.

At the function, Jamit also announced an MRP grants of RM3,000 to the longhouse Women’s Bureau to buy kitchen utensils and another RM3,000 for the tailoring of Tanjung traditional costumes, RM7,000 for the longhouse development and security committee (JKKK) to buy plastic mats for the 31-door longhouse and another RM5,000 to repair  a wooden bridge in the village.
