KUCHING: Jealousy drove a man into fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend’s friend in a pre-dawn incident at a residential area along Jalan Stephen Yong on Friday.

Padawan district police headquarters chief Supt Aidil Bolhassan said the dispute broke out between the victim and suspect supposedly because the victim was said to be close to his former girlfriend, the complainant.

“Prior to the 4.30am incident, the three of them went out with some other friends for a drink at an eatery where they were believed to become intoxicated.

“The two quarrelled briefly then fought during which the victim punched the suspect. Apparently angered by the victim’s action, the suspect took a knife from the kitchen and stabbed the victim on his left ribs and also caused injuries to his left elbow,” Supt Aidil said when contacted yesterday.

Supt Aidil pointed out that the 37-year-old complainant and the 26-year-old suspect were once in a relationship and the suspect had expressed his interest to reconcile with the complainant.

However, the complainant refused and caused a dispute between the 21-year-old victim and the suspect.

Following the incident, the victim was rushed to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), where he succumbed to his injuries at 2am the following morning (yesterday).

Police arrested the suspect at 1.17pm on Friday, and he admitted to have stabbed the victim. The weapon has also been seized for investigation purposes.

Police have reclassified the case as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code from Section 326 of the same Code for causing grievous hurt.

“The suspect has also been remanded for six days to facilitate investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code,” he said.
