JKR, contractors to prioritise public safety

KUCHING: The Public Works Department (JKR) and its contractors have been urged by Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian to uphold all safety regulations during the construction of new roads in Batu Kawa near here.

The Local Government and Housing Minister also urged the public to be the eyes and ears of the authorities, and report any road safety negligence.

“I was reassured by Sarawak JKR working on the Pan Borneo Road project that the contractors will improve (on road safety) and do what is required of them this month.

“This is after a road safety audit in August as Sarawak JKR just took over the Pan Borneo project management from the federal JKR in March but progress was delayed by a stop-work order due to Covid-19,” he said in a Facebook post on Thursday (Sept 10).

Dr Sim said the safety of road users must be a priority. “The death of any road user during the construction phase is not acceptable in western countries and neither (is it) in Sarawak.”

“In western countries, any negligence, even unintentional, is not just subject to blacklist or fine but even imprisonment.

“The public must report any road safety issue to the authorities. Sarawak JKR will share information with the public of any new changes to road works from time to time,” he added.
