JKR to upgrade road to Murum longhouses

KUCHING: The Public Works Department (JKR) have been urged to upgrade the main road to three longhouses in the Murum constituency.

Its assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon said the road serves as the main link to Rh. Lasah Mering, Rh. Gong Laing and Rh. Mering Madang, Tubau.

“We request that the JKR to upgrade the road which is approximately 2.5km long which is now damaged and is in an unsafe condition,” he said in a Facebook post today.

On Tuesday, Chukpai with the Bintulu division JKR and representatives of the nearby village safety and development committees (JKKKs) visited the road to assess its condition.

He said the road was formerly a timber road used by logging companies. With logging activities ceased for the past four years, the road is now currently abandoned.

“However, nearby villagers still use the road as the main medium of transportation despite not been maintained,” he said.

Chukpai hoped that the authorities will take note of the issue and attend to it promptly to ensure the safety and comfort of the dwellers.

“Let us all pray that this problem can be resolved immediately for the convenience and needs of our people,” he said.

In the meantime, he reminded the residents to continue practising the standard operating procedures (SOPs) outlined by the authorities to contain the spread of Covid-19 in their area.
