KUCHING: An unemployed man was fined RM4,000 in default of seven month’s imprisonment by the Magistrates’ Court here on Wednesday (Jan 12) for damaging his mother’s property early January.

Accused Hafizi Yusop pleaded guilty after the charge was read out by an interpreter in front of Magistrate Zaiton Anuar.

The 42-year-old was charged with damaging a washing machine and two televisions belonging to his mother, Hasmah Usop, 64, causing a total loss of RM3,000, at their Kampung Goeblit home in Jalan Bako at about 4.15pm on Jan 8.

The accused was charged under Section 427 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of not less than one year and not exceeding five years or a fine or both, if convicted.

Based on the facts of the case, the accused, who is a widower and has one child, suddenly ran amok and acted aggressively, breaking the items in his mother’s house.

During the incident, the accused, who is the fourth of eight siblings, also threw bricks onto the roof of a neighbour’s house apart from his mother’s house.

The accused has a criminal record and was jailed last year for the same offence.

Insp Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang prosecuted the case while the accused was unrepresented.
