Johari officiates PBB Kuching Aidifitri do

KUCHING: The education sector will become Sarawak’s priority in its efforts to develop  quality human capital in order to achieve a developed nation status by 2030.

Chief Minister, Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg stated this in his speech when officiating the Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Kuching Zone “Ramah Mesra Aidilfitri” (Hari Raya gathering)  at Penview Convention Centre on Thursday.

“Our future depends on the quality of our students and our people. If we want  better quality human captial, education is the only way to change our future, regardless of the family background,” added the Chief Minister.

He pointed out that the state had the Tun Taib Scholarship Foundation  to inspire and support Sarawakian children to undertake post-graduate studies, especially at the doctorate (PhD) level, and in certain fields to help to boost the state economy.

“This is our chance and what we must do now is to support our children in their education,” he said.

Johari also disclosed that the Sarawak Foundation had come to an agreement with the timber contractors in the state to increase the premium payment from 80 cents to RM50 per tonne.

“This has given Yayasan Sarawak an  increased fund from RM9 million to RM300 million for the education loans and scholarships for Sarawakians,” he said.

Meanwhile, Johari, who is also PBB President, said that PBB must become the catalyst for change in Sarawak and turn the state into a developed nation by 2030

“This demands a leadership that has vision and is also united. Thank God, we have our next generation of leadership in line,” he said.

Earlier on, Works Minister, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said that Johari was a leader   committed to the party’s struggle. 

“Although he is still new as our Chief Minister, he fought for a lot of things that benefit all of us.”

More than 2,000 members from PBB Kuching Zone attended the “Ramah Mesra Aidilfitri’”.

Also present were Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Amar Awang TengahAli Hasan,  Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly, Datuk Amar Mohamd Asfia Awang Nasar and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.
