MIRI: The Health, Counselling and Disability Services Department of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) is inviting members of the public to join its next public webinar titled ‘Dealing with the Human Vampire’.
It will be the latest in a series of mental health webinars the university is conducting as a public service, following the success of three earlier webinars.
The webinar will be hosted on Cisco Webex from 2pm to 3.30pm (UTC/GMT +8) today (May 6).
Attendance is free of charge but participants are required to pre-register at https://bit.ly/3eMZAJT.
Conducted by Curtin Malaysia certified university counsellors Dorety Panggil and Jessica Akang, it will focus on the effects of being around human vampires, a.k.a. toxic people, and strategies to deal with such people to maintain one’s mental and physical wellbeing.
“People occasionally say rude or hurtful things they don’t mean. No one feels their best all the time and being in a bad mood can make you lash out, but they may not realise the negative impacts it may have on others,” said Dorety.
“Sometimes simply being more aware of how a toxic person’s behaviour can affect you can help you better navigate interactions with them.”
Curtin Malaysia’s Health, Counselling and Disability Services Department supports the safety and wellbeing of the campus’ diverse community of students and staff through the provision of a wide range of counselling services, and health and disability related services at its Health Centre.
The department also organises seminars and talks highlighting health and safety issues, as well as community service projects involving staff and students as part of its community engagement initiatives.
Given the current Covid-19 situation, its seminars and talks are all conducted online.
For the time being, the department will continue to run webinars with interesting topics of public interest once or twice a month.
Its past webinars, entitled ‘Love-Hate Relationships’ and the two-part ‘How to Respond to Someone who is Feeling Suicidal’, were well attended by participants from all over Malaysia.
