KUCHING: Any further defections of MPs from Perikatan Nasional (PN) led by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to Pakatan Harapan could lead to a possibility of both the general election and Sarawak state election to be held together.

The Sarawak polls must be held by June next year.

Political observer Datuk Peter Minos noted that if Tun Dr Mahathir and the group in PH push Muhyiddin to a corner, the prime minister would have no choice but to dissolve Parliament and call for fresh election as it was very hard for the PN government to operate with a very slim majority of one or two MPs.

“It is unstable and easily toppled by the defection flu,” said Minos in alluding to the recent resignation of deputy works minister and Bersatu MP Shahruddin Salleh following his meeting with Dr Mahathir on Thursday.

Minos noted that Muhyiddin was finding life uneasy and always in tension and this was a reality, adding that the only solution was to get a fresh mandate from the people and a big majority.

Thus, he said a general election was necessary in a search for political peace and stability.

“The latest rumours are that it will be held soon and there is a possibility that both the general election and Sarawak election be held together,” added Minos.

But, he said it was really up to the prime minister and chief minister to talk and agree on the matter.

Minos opined that if election is held soon after the Covid-19 crisis is over, Muhyiddin and PN would win decisively.

This, he said, is because Malaysians have respect and confidence in Muhyiddin and PN’s rule but not for PH and Dr Mahathir’s group which had failed and was crisis ridden and much ridiculed.

He said while Muhyiddin had proven to be good and decisive, Dr Mahathir and PH were not only disunited but divisive.

“Malaysians are yearning for political stability and normalcy.

“Personally I say it’s best and wise for Muhyiddin to hold election early even by August or September this year while Malaysians are still having good mood towards PN for what it has done thus far while people still remember,” he said.

For Sarawak, Minos said Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) was doing fine and thus it would have a better time than PN as the opposition parties were disunited.
