KUCHING: The first 6,000 hectares of Nusantara, the new Indonesian capital in East Kalimantan, is expected to be up and running by August 2024.
Consulate General to the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching, Raden Sigit Witjaksono, said the Ibu Kota Negara (IKN) or central government area will consist of the presidential palace, parliamentary building, and two to three ministerial offices.
He said President Jokowi Widodo had officiated the new capital’s groundbreaking ceremony earlier in June this year.
Nusantara is set to be established on approximately 256,000 hectares of land and progress is currently being made to the main area of 6,000 hectares followed by 56,000 hectares that will consist of other facilities.
“We need to prepare a lot for the new capital as our President had informed that he wishes to start the office there in August 2024,” he told New Sarawak Tribune and Suara Sarawak.
Further sharing on the significance of the main area of Nusantara to be up and running by August 2024, he said Jokowi’s wish is to hold independence celebrations for that year in the new capital.
“Moreover, the current presidential term will end in October 2024. We are hopeful that everything will go according to plan,” he said.
Raden said the head and deputy head for the new capital’s IKN was appointed directly by Jokowi in February this year.
Touching on the Nation’s Capital Master Plan namely Path to 2045: IKN Milestone based on IKN Vision and Aspirations, he said the target is to see Nusantara as a world’s leading city for competitiveness and livability by the year 2045.
Besides this, they are targeting for the new capital to be in the top 10 livable cities in the world with net zero emission and 100 per cent installed renewable energy.
“We have set our target for 2045 because it will mark 100 years of Indonesia’s independence so it will be very meaningful,” he added.
