Juvenile pleads guilty to robbing cafes

KUCHING: A youth pleaded guilty in two separate Sessions Courts to two counts of gang robbery at two cafes using samurai swords and “kwang tao”.

The accused, a juvenile offender, confessed after an interpreter read the charge sheet in front of two judges, Jason Juga and Maris Agan.

According to the first charge, he committed group robbery at a cafe in Bandar Baru Samariang with an accomplice who is still at large on October 3 at around 4.20am.

The duo were charged with robbery using a “kwang tao” and stealing a cashier’s machine and RM242.40 in cash.

According to the second charge, the juvenile offender and two of his accomplices who are still at large committed a gang robbery at a restaurant near Jalan Batu Kawa around 6.30am on October 4.

During the incident, the accused used a samurai blade to rob a 23-year-old female victim.

Both charges are framed under Section 395 and Section 397 of the Penal Code.

If convicted, the punishment is up to 20 years in jail and whipping of the rotan.

However, the court scheduled a social report hearing for the accused, a minor offender, on November 25.

In addition, Maris Agan released the accused with cash bail of RM7,000 along with two local sureties.

Jason also granted the accused a RM10,000 cash bail with two local sureties.

The case is being prosecuted by two Deputy Public Prosecutors, Norshafatihah Nor Azmi and Ruvinasini Pandian.

The case was investigated by Investigating Officer Sergeant Major Valentine Peter Kiang, and the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
