THE flood problem at Kampung Bukit Berangan and Taman Samarindah in Kota Samarahan will be addressed under the Integrated River Basin Development Project (PLSB) along the Sarawak River and Proposed Flood Mitigation and Drainage Master Plan Study of Sarawak River Basin.

Assistant Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil (PDP-Marudi) said the flood woes were due to the loss of storage ability, increase in discharge due to dense housing development in the surrounding areas and limited capacity of existing outlets, which are natural streams.

“The master plan study is scheduled to be completed by year end and the findings will help to identify the long-term solution to the frequent floods at Taman Samarindah.

“As a long-term or holistic approach, there is a need for an integrated land use master plan or infrastructure plan for planning approval and sustainable development,” he said during question time at the DUN sitting on Tuesday (Nov 10).

Penguang said river cleaning works at the drainage outlet of Kampung Bukit Berangan, which is Sungai Stigang, had been carried out annually by the Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID).

“DID will continue to carry out the works from time to time based on the availability of funds.”

He added that Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) would continue to maintain the local drainage system within the area by carrying out cleaning works on a monthly basis.

“MPKS will also carry out the upgrading works on 17,000m of existing drains and culverts in phases under the 12th Malaysia Plan.

“Total funds required by MPKS for this is RM20 million.”
