BAU: Kampung Skiat’s baby corn farming initiative has received a boost in the form of a ploughing tractor.

Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Henry Harry Jinep said the machine, worth RM83,000, was purchased using the Agriculture Facilitation Fund from the Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development Sarawak Ministry.

Fifty-eight residents of the village in the Tasik Biru constituency are taking part in the farming programme.

“This machine was to be delivered last year but due to Covid-19, this was delayed because it is imported from Japan.

“However, I’m confident that with this machine, the process of planting baby corns in Kampung Skiat will be more effective so that more manpower can be focused on other tasks such as packaging and marketing.”

He told the media this after handing over the ploughing tractor at the Kampung Skiat Baru Multi-Purpose Hall here on Wednesday (March 24).

Henry said the machine was purchased after taking into account the great potential of baby corn farming in the area.

“We concentrate on one specific commodity per village, for example, Kampung Skiat with their baby corns, and other villages with other types of commodity,” he explained, adding that Kampung Skiat had been active in baby corn farming for a number of years.

Henry called on fresh graduates and youths to participate in agricultural activities as they had great monetary potential.

“The state and federal governments are also ready to help such as providing capital and other types of assistance.

“The ministry will also help to monitor the progress of these farms to ensure that they are able to reach their full potential.”
