KUCHING: The dilapidated and unsafe condition of the Kapit Indoor Stadium is in dire need of repair, said Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) deputy Information chief Andy Lawrence.

He said if the condition of the stadium is good and safe, it would be the best place for the Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Ministry to organise the Youth Day celebration.

“The Kapit folks feel gratitude and joy towards the Sarawak government, especially Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah (Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development), for choosing Kapit as the venue to celebrate the state-level National Youth Day 2023 from October 26 to 28 this year.

“We understand that the celebration will be downsized due to constraints that Kapit may have, especially regarding accommodation and limited facilities.

“However, we would like to bring to the minister’s attention the dilapidated and unsafe condition of the Kapit Indoor Stadium, which is in dire need of repair and has been long overdue. Otherwise, it would be the best place for the celebration,” he said in a press statement today (June 25).

He added that there are no other sports facilities in the division for the youth to gather and organise activities such as badminton, netball, basketball, futsal, and more.

“The indoor stadium is not only for our youth but for the entire community as well. There is also limited space for schools to organise sports competitions due to the closure of this indoor stadium for many years,” he said.

Therefore, he believed and stressed that it was about time for the Sarawak Sports Corporation to look into this problem urgently.

“The Kapit community deserves better,” he said.
