SIBU: Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah was confident that a direct flight between Sibu and Kota Kinabalu would materialise once negotiation with Air Asia is completed.

According to him, the sector is among the seven aviation sectors in the state which his ministry is still negotiating with the relevant parties.

“The seven aviation sectors include Sibu to Kota Kinabalu, and I believe at the end of the discussion, we will get flights from Sibu to Kota Kinabalu.

“I am quite confident that by the end of the negotiation, we will be able to secure the Sibu-KK flight,” he said.

Apart from that, Karim said that his ministry is also trying to look at the Sibu-Singapore sector and hopefully can also secure it in the near future.

“Give us a little bit of time to do this as there are little bits of technicality that need to be done,” he said at the launching of Sibu Lantern Festival and 1Malaysia Food Fair at Sibu Town Square here on Tuesday night.

The festival from 3 to 26 October is being organised by the Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) and supported by Sibu Municipal Council (SMC).

Since he took over the ministry, Karim said he has been trying to bring more connecting flights not only to Kuching but other towns in Sarawak including Sibu.

“We have managed to get direct flights from Shenzhen, China to Kuching, which is expected to start in December this year. The second flight from China to Sarawak that is likely to be introduced early next year is from Fuzhou,” he said.

Minister of International Trade and E-Commerce, Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, Chairman of SMC, Datuk Tiong Thai King and his deputy, Rogayah Jemain, President of Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dr Hii Sui Cheng, Sibu Police chief ACP Zailanni Amit and Sibu Resident, Hii Chang Kee were among those present.
