KUCHING: Keep politicking and electioneering for next year and focus now on economic recovery and rebuilding lives after two years of COVID-19, said Kota Samarahan Municipal Council chairman Datuk Peter Minos.

He added that the court cluster should not put pressure on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to call on an early general election in October this year.

The “court cluster” refers to a group of Umno leaders who are either on trial or have been convicted on such charges as criminal breach of trust, abuse of power and money laundering.

“Only the PM has the legal power and right to advise the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah on the dissolution of parliament and thus of holding the GE15.

“It is best and wise to leave the PM alone to make his own decisions, and no one should put any pressure on him,” said the political pundit.

According to him, the court cluster  has personal reasons for an early GE but the PM has greater overriding national reasons.

“Malaysians have only just almost out of the fear and pains of COVID and are also just starting to recover both socially and economically.

“The whole nation too is just recovering and trying very hard to get normalcy back, hence there is no logical and valid reason to hold GE this year, at least until the economy recovers on firmer ground,” he pointed out.

He went on to say that since the GE would not begin until May of next year,  they should be patient and not cause such a stir.

“People’s feelings and moods are important; going against them can lead to complications and trouble.”
