KUCHING: Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has urged every sports body in Sarawak to put politics aside.

“This (sports body) is the place to excel and train athletes. So please put aside all this mess within the associations.

“The role of the associations is to look after the athletes and build them up to become champions, not to engage in politics,” stressed the state Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development Minister.

He said this at the Sarawak Sports Council (SSC) appreciation dinner here on Sunday (Jan 23).

Abdul Karim further noted that when sports is well administered, the performance of the athletes and sports would increase.

“Hence, I would like to call on the athletes to personally contact me if you feel that the SSC has been unfair to you.

“I will make sure that your name will not be revealed. Just tell me what is the problem and what are the things you’re not happy with.

“I would like to know what is the problem and the reasons why we are not able to achieve or become better in our performance because I believe that all Sarawakians want to see Sarawak excel in every sport.”

He also reminded those entrusted to look after the athletes to carry out their duties as best as possible.

“Up until now, we have successfully produced three Olympians. We will continue to develop our athletes through various sports development programmes and hope that by 2030, we will be able to increase the number of Olympians to eight.”
