KUCHING: Airlines must play a pivotal role in addressing ongoing concerns by providing for more flights into and within Sarawak.

State Minister of Transport Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said this was to ensure flight fares are capped at affordable prices.

“This is to ensure Sarawakians are able to travel back to their hometowns and return to work or study, especially during festive season and school holidays,” he said in a statement to address concerns over  limited seats and exorbitant flight fares.

A discussion was held with AirAsia Berhad’s Sarawak Affairs Relations Officer Hamdan Mohamad, at which the airline said it had launched the Fixed Fares Campaign at RM199 one-way to avoid any abrupt increase to flight fares.

At the same meeting, Lee also requested AirAsia to re-introduce the Kuching-Shenzhen-Kuching flight, saying his ministry has sought the views of business, tourism and logistic stakeholders.

“All of them have expressed their strong support to request AirAsia to re-activate the Kuching-Shenzhen-Kuching flight which AirAsia terminated after one year of operation.
