KUCHING: While commending the Sarawak government in announcing the closure of schools in Covid-19 red zones, Sarawak Patriots Association (SPA) also urged the Ministry of Education (MOE) to ensure students could continue their studies online.

Its chairman Datuk Dr John Lau Pang Heng said it is indeed timely for the state government to make the announcement as it has been reported that 400 students in Miri were infected, Selangau with 99 students and Kuching with 100 students.

“We pray that the MOE will keep the students busy during the 14-day period through online learning,” he said on Monday (April 19).

He added that many are also concerned with the continuing trend of positive Covid-19 cases.

“From April 10 to 18, Sarawak had 4,352 persons tested positive for Covid-19. It represented 18 percent of the total number of persons infected in Sarawak since March 2020,” he said.

On another note, he said that SPA have visited several eateries and found that cafe owners are taking careful steps when serving their customers.

“They are making extra efforts by using hot water to sterilise plates, bowls, and eating utensils.

“Such practice is admirable and highly appreciated by their customers, and we are convinced that every eatery is taking such steps to fight Covid-19,” he said.

Touching on the state’s Covid-19 immunisation programme, he said that SPA has received phone calls from individuals concerned about the second phase of the vaccination which has kicked off in Sibu on April 19, while Kuching, Serian, Sri Aman, Betong, Kapit, Mukah and Miri divisions will begin theirs on April 23.

“Many are asking if there are sufficient vaccines and syringes. Therefore, we hope that there are enough available for the second phase of the programme which will focus on 929,435 individuals who are in high-risk groups, like those above 60 and individuals with comorbidities,” said Lau.
