SIBU: You can bring about a cleaner environment by first cleaning your own house compound.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Chairman, Clarence Ting, made the point when officiating at the ‘Gotong Royong Mega 1.0 Perangi Aedes 2022’ at Kampung Bahagia Jaya Teku on Sunday.

According to Ting whenever people gather and conduct gotong royong it is a good sign.

“That shows you care about the place where you stay and you care about the hygienic condition.

“One of the biggest problems is looking after the garden of our house,” he said, pointing out that when he was in Klang he noticed the condition was very similar to Sibu.

“There are a lot of houses left unattended in Klang, I was very surprised,” he said.

Ting hoped things change for the better with people looking after the inside of their house and compound as this is where such diseases like Aedes come from.

“You don’t keep water clean, it is left unattended, and that is the cause of Aedes not because of the drains.

“So, I hope all of you in your kampung area, in your house, will look after the inside of the house,” he said, assuring the SMC will take care of the rest.

Ting said if both parties work together to clean up both outside and within the house compound, they can make the place better.

Apart from that, Ting also advised residents to look after plants they are planting along the roadside.

“I see many trees on the roadside. For those of you who plant please look after them. If you don’t SMC is going to cut them down.

“There is no point planting trees outside the house if you don’t look after them,” he said.

Ting hoped his advice will be taken seriously by the residents not only in Kampung Bahagia Jaya Teku but the whole of Sibu.
