Keglers due for Sarawak Hornbill Team Cup

KUCHING: The upcoming Sarawak Hornbill Team Cup 2023 will serve as a platform for talented tenpin bowlers to showcase their skills and attract new athletes.

Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, announced that the tournament, scheduled to take place at Megalanes Batu Kawa from July 3 to 9, will feature bowlers from across the country.

The tournament is sanctioned by the Asian Bowling Federation (ABF) and Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC).

To date, six teams from Sabah, two teams each from Megamall Bowling Centre Penang, MTBC National Youth, Kuala Lumpur, and Selangor have confirmed their participation.

As the host, Sarawak will be sending 22 teams to compete in various categories, including singles, doubles, trios, all events, team, and overall champion.

“We hope with tournaments such as this, the passion of tenpin bowling athletes towards the sport will increase further,” he said at a press conference here yesterday,

Karim felt with the effort made by the Amateur Bowling Association of Sarawak (ABAS) here in organising the tournament, Sarawak’s tenpin bowling athletes will be ready for SUKMA 2024.

He also stated that aside from its objective to gauge local athletes going against regional athletes, this tournament will also help in boosting Sarawak’s domestic tourism.

“Athletes who come from outside Kuching will surely visit our tourism spots, buy our local tourism products, try our local delicacies and many more. All these will help our tourism industry here,” he said.

Among those present at the press conference were Tenpin Bowling Association Deputy  President Shaifulbahri Shukri, Sarawak Tenpin Bowling Association Vice President Robert Lu, Sarawak Tenpin Bowling Association President Sunny Si , Malaysia Open Bowling Champion Lavinia Kho, Sarawak Sports Corporation and Sarawak Sports Council Director Awang Putrayusrie Awang Redzuan, Khaairul Nizam Morshidi of the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development and SSC Sport Development Division Head Ahmad Rodzli Hashim.
