MUKAH: The Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration provides an opportunity for hawkers at the Pasar Tamu (jungle produce market) here to earn some extra income.

A day or two before the celebration, Muslims make the necessary preparations such as cooking lemang and ketupat.

Among the preparations include buying bamboo andketupat casings.

Bamboo is used to prepare lemang (glutinous rice mixed with coconut milk and salt) cooked on open fire, whileketupat casings are used as a medium to put the same rice combination and cooked in a pot over a gas stove.

Bamboo and ketupat casings are readily available at the Pasar Tamu here.

A female hawker, who did not wish to be identified, was among the hawkers making and selling ketupat casings on Thursday (July 30).

She said she had been weaving and sellingketupat casings for many years.

“My late father taught me how to weave the casings,” she said.

According to her, the casings are sold for RM2 per six units, and several units had already been snapped up.
