Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah

KUCHING: The National Council of Professors Malaysia (MPN) has expressed confidence that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah could amicably resolve the current political turmoil in the country.

The crisis has culminated in Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin resigning as the prime minister after he lost parliamentary majority. His decision also saw the resignation of the entire federal Cabinet members.

In a statement issued yesterday, the council described Muhyiddin’s resignation as a “good sign”, adding it was following the provisions of the constitution.

Muhyiddin announced his resignation at 3pm on August 16 after he had an audience with his royal highness, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

“As such, it is now up to the wisdoms of his royal highness the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, as the supreme head of the country, to take further steps in the interest of the people and the nation, and also following the provisions of the Constitution,” the council added in a press statement yesterday.

MPN said basically, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong may appoint a new prime minister who had the majority parliamentary support and to lead the country until the next general election.

“If none of the MPs can get majority parliamentary support to be the new prime minister, we are then confident that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong would then order the proclamation of an Emergency and further establish a National Movement Council which may be chaired by a national leadership figure, approved by His Majesty.”

This would be a temporary measure until the 15th general election (GE15) and the appointment of a new parliamentary democratic government, following the Constitution, said MPN.

MPN has expressed confidence that under the proclamation of Emergency,  the relevant authorities may enact some important ordinances to enable the Election Commission (EC) to plan and implement GE15 with appropriate SOPs to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Once this new SOP has been drafted and ready for implementation, either the interim prime minister or the MGN then may carry their responsibilities within a limited time until the GE15 can be held.”
