TATAU: Three more kliriengs (burial poles) at the Penyarai River will be transferred to the Tatau District Office for conservation purposes.

According to Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) in a news report, the transfer of the burial poles was agreed by the Tatau Heritage Restoration Committee.

It was reported that in October last year, a burial pole was found at the Penyarai River by the local residents.

As a result of that, the Sarawak Museum Department has held a meeting recently to discuss the transfer of the burial poles.

Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk John Sikie Tayai who also attended the meeting said, if the burial poles are left in the river then such heritage will simply disappear.

“Efforts to relocate and preserve this klirieng must be done,” he said.

This burial pole known as the Klirieng Mesken is 22 feet long, 10 inches wide and 22 inches in diameter.

In addition, there is another klirieng that was found about 10 metres from where the first klirieng was found and it is 18 feet long and 10 inches wide.
