KUCHING: The Sarawak government is reviewing the salary or allowance of community leaders and village chiefs (KMKK).

Asajaya assemblyman, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the minimum wage is already set at the national level.

“If the salaries or allowances of the KMKK are below the minimum wage, it would be a shame for the government.

“ We hope that with this reevaluation, it will encourage the community leaders. After all we know that the service they render is done voluntarily,” he said.

Abdul Karim said this during an appreciation ceremony for KMKK of Asajaya here Monday (May 27).

At the ceremony a total 15 community leaders and village chiefs (KMKK) in Asajaya received their appointment certificates.

Eleven were reappointed to their post while four were newly appointed.

The newly appointed KMKK in Asajaya are Kamal Ludin Tamam (village chief): Kampung Sambir;Zamahari Jonen (village chief): Kampung Asajaya Tengah; Pridy Regus (longhouse chief): Kampung Moyan Ledang; and Chai Kim Kiong (Kapitan): Pekan Asajaya.

The 11 reappointed are Dallan Man (Penghulu): Kpg Asajaya Ulu;
Jet Ain (Penghulu): Kpg Serpan Laut/Ulu; Oton Bujang (Penghulu): Kampung Rebak; John Gawit Dugat (Penghulu): Kpg Sampun Gerunggang Kelili, Jugu, Baru ,Tebun; Tamel Mohamad (Penghulu): Kpg Tambirat Beliong, Tanjung Apong; Liu Ted Kong (Kapitan): Belong/Jorong/Beradek/Sg. Pinang; Denis Paka (longhouse chief): Kampung Sampun Baru; Sabahan Alis (village chief): Kampung Lubuk Kura; Jama Haji Baylai (village chief): Kampung Sebandi Ulu; Bahren Samat (village chief): Kampung Sebandi Matang; and Likam Tambi (longhouse chief): Kampung Sampun Jugu.

Meanwhile, at the same event, the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) handed RM300,000 to build the Sam San Kuak Bong temple in Sambir Asajaya.
