KOTA SAMARAHAN: There are actually six types of domestic violence: verbal, monetary, social, sexual, mental, and physical abuse.

During a talk on domestic violence at La Promenade Mall on Saturday, Mary Ulok, a senior social worker from the Sarawak Women for Women Society (SWWS) said that it’s important to know this because it helps us understand how common domestic violence is, the different ways it can happen, and the impact it has.

Mary also mentioned Act 521, a law that protects both wives and husbands from domestic violence.

She highlighted the availability of a shelter for those experiencing abuse and a One Stop Crisis Centre at the hospital, which offers assistance to individuals in violent relationships.

When helping victims, Mary stressed the need to avoid being judgmental.

For more information on domestic violence, individuals can visit the SWWS office on the fourth floor of La Promenade Mall. SWWS operates from Monday to Friday, with the support of many volunteers.
