KUCHING: One must have the foundation of knowledge gained from a tertiary education course, but flexibility can be applied when selecting a profession later, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“What I am saying is knowledge is an asset to us. This knowledge is our base and should be continuously increased,” he said in his speech at the ‘Career Venture in Highly Demanded Professions’ Seminar held at Yayasan Sarawak, yesterday.

“Knowledge is the basis of life. Whether we can generate income from it is up to us,” he stated.

Abang Johari remarked that irrespective of course selected at university, new career pathways could be explored.

He pointed out that it was not uncommon to see cases where one’s career did not directly match one’s university degree, sharing two stories with the young audience — one of an engineer, who became a modern farmer and another of a lawyer who switched professions, instead producing handicrafts in America.

However, he emphasised that the knowledge gained from their degrees could assist them in their new professions.

“For example, the person who makes crafts knows about intellectual property (IP) rights and contracts, and this is useful in her new career.”

“The engineer uses his engineering background to help in his agricultural work too — such as in fertigation which applies mechatronics.”

Meanwhile, the chief minister emphasised that finding employment would not be an issue with the creation of a variety of new jobs as the state’s economy developed and flourished.

“Work is based on our economy. This is why there must be a sound economic system or policy,” he stated.

Sharing words of wisdom with the to-be tertiary students, Abang Johari advised, “The future is bright, but do not be too choosy. As long as you feel it is right, focus on it.”

At the same time, he commended the seminar for providing career guidance to the attending students.

Also present were Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Satok deputy chairman Ibrahim Baki and political secretary to the chief minister Abdul Samad Ghani.
