KOTA Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap has appealed to the Sarawak government for development funds to be allocated to resolve the flash flood problems faced by residents in his constituency.

He stated that there are still flash flooding problems affecting his constituents such as residents at Borneo Garden off Jalan Lapangan Terbang and Taman Happy Valley off Jalan Tun Jugah.

“Sarawak still has a lot of catching up in infrastructure development. Therefore, the allocation of RM1.12bil under the 2023 State Budget to intensify infrastructure development from roads and utilities to accelerate economic growth is indeed farsighted,” he said this in his debate speech for the Supply Bill (2023) 2022 during the third day of the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on Today(Nov 23).

Referring to the increasing traffic along Jalan Stakan, Jalan Liu Shan Bang and Jalan Sungai Tapang, Yap also appealed to the state government to conduct a comprehensive traffic study and provide an allocation to upgrade the roads mentioned to facilitate the reduction of congestion due to peak hours.

On the allocation of RM65mil in 2023 State Budget for developing industrial estates, he said it would go a long way towards creating business opportunities and high paying jobs thus making the living standards of ordinary Sarawakians higher.

“The various initiatives of provision of soft loan, interest subsidy, financial assistance for startups, product development capacity building, e-commerce as well as promotion and marketing will definitely shore up confidence and attract more investments from both local and foreign investors.”

At the same time, he appealed to the state government through the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) to speed up the rehabilitation of Stabar Quarry site and develop the areas surrounding the quarry into a recreational park.
He said it had potential to draw visitors to Kota Sentosa and thereby increase business activities in Kota Sentosa and surrounding areas.

“There is a budget allocation of RM87mil for the development and upgrading of tourism products and facilities. Tourism has proven to be an effective sector for economic growth.”
