SIBU: Umno Council of Advisors chairman Tan Sri Tengku Razaleigh (Ku Li) Hamzah’s call for party members to get ready for a snap general election is just a desperate move to keep Umno and PAS members united.

DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang added that Tengku Razaleigh knew that as PAS had “moral high ground”, it was becoming more difficult to get it to form a pact with Umno due to Umno’s many “immoral activities”.

“Saying that a snap election is round the corner is a desperate move to create a feverish situation among Umno members so that they will respond to him, for them to work hard and unite with PAS.

“But I don’t think (Umno-PAS unity) will happen so long as Umno has ‘Malu Apa, Bossku’ campaign, associated with Najib’s kleptocracy. PAS has moral high ground while Umno is responsible for telling lies and responsible for other immoral activities like corruption.

“So that is why there is a necessity for them to invent a situation that election is around the corner and that PAS and Umno leaders must work hard to unite,” Lim said after a “After Sandakan, It’s Sarawak” forum on Thursday night.

He said a snap election was not in the works as the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government still had a lot of work to do in the implementation of ‘Malaysia Baru’.

“There is the implementation of a new Malaysia, in particular the return of autonomy to Sabah and Sarawak as enshrined in MA63 (Malaysia Agreement 1963). It is easier to develop this process when there is PH in Putrajaya.”

Lim said the people of Sandakan who had voted for PH-DAP in the recent by-election had shown that the PH government would be there for a very long time.

“Likewise Umno and PAS would continue to propagate politics of lies, extremism and falsehood when they together with GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak) failed to support and provide the needed two-thirds majority in Parliament for the constitution amendment to return autonomy to Sabah and Sarawak.”
