MIRI: The Kuala Baram Cycling Race 2023, which is organised by Miri City Council (MCC) in collaboration with Masterpiece Cycling Club, will kick off from July 29 and 30.
Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said that the event is being organised to promote a healthy lifestyle as well as to promote Miri City as a destination for cycling race events in Sarawak.
It is expected to attract 1,000 cyclists both locals and from abroad.
“The introduction of Kuala Baram Cycling Race 2023 is one of the initiatives of the city council in promoting a healthy lifestyle focusing on enhancing the quality of living, the well-being of Mirians.
“In addition to this, this is a target under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) goal related to MCC’s development and implementation of Low Carbon City Framework.
“A low carbon city has proven benefits on public health, economy and healthy living environment,” he said during the Pre-Launching Ceremony of the Kuala Baram Cycling Race 2023 at Bintang Mega Mall here yesterday.
Apart from that, he said it is viable that such a programme can become a tourism event with the consistent efforts of the event organiser, say for instance, to hold it annually at a specific time as well with the loyal support from the local and overseas cyclists.
He is optimistic that it can be sustained and can become one of the tourism events under the Sarawak Calendar of Tourism Events.
“I would like to urge the general public and business sectors especially those involved in such sport to give their strong support for the benefit of the local economy and Miri City at large apart from promoting healthy lifestyle among the local communities,” he concluded.
