KUCHING: Police busted an online gambling syndicate in a raid on a residential house in Jalan Stampin here yesterday (April 2).

The racket is believed to have reaped profits of about RM90,000 in its three months of operation.

Police also detained 13 men, including six foreigners, on suspicion of running the gambling centre (calling centre).

Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said the raid was carried out by Kuching district police headquarters (IPD) D7 branch.

The centre had been operating on a 24-hour basis with shifts for the past three months.

“Each suspect hired to operate the centre was paid a monthly salary and bonuses of up to RM1,500. The suspects aged between 18 and 36, would promote online gambling to customers via calls and social media.

“Based on their transaction records, they reportedly reaped profits of about RM1,000 per day and about RM30,000 per month,” he said.

Mohd Azman said police are searching for the owner of the residence to facilitate investigation.

Also seized during in the raid were nine monitors, nine CPUs, 26 phones, routers, modems, and other equipment.

The case is being investigated under Section 4(1)(g) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which carries a fine of up to RM50,000 and a jail term of up to three years, upon conviction.

The suspects can also be fined up to RM50,000 for each confiscated gambling equipment.
