KUCHING: The Kuching Hokkien Association recently held its 45th Studies Excellence Awards ceremony.

At the event, 91 applicants received 80 awards valued at RM13,010.

Chairman of Education Committee of Kuching Hokkien Association cum Deputy president of the Federation of Aided Chinese Primary School Boards of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian (Tunglian), Rodger Chan Siong Boh, said the total cost of the awards for this year was RM15,000.

“Education is a cultural matter. Culture and society are closely related. Culture is about human society and inspires us to understand and respect the history and the world we live in,” he explained.

He further shared that many Chinese primary schools now had non-Chinese students and in the 57 aided Chinese primary schools in Kuching, Samarahan and Serian division, about 30 per cent of them are non-Chinese students.

“Among the 223 aided Chinese primary schools in Sarawak, around 35 per cent are Bumiputra students. In some Chinese primary schools in the rural areas, there are even more than 85 per cent of Bumiputra students,” he added.

He added that today’s Chinese primary schools were similar to all community schools and that Chinese schools were no longer just for Chinese children.

“These Chinese schools, recognised by Bumiputra parents, can enhance mutual understanding and promote cultural harmony.

“The financial support of Chinese school enthusiasts from the community has also lightened the government and the country’s school funding burden.

“Moreover, Chinese school graduates provide the manpower and resources needed by the country. They have made great contributions to the economy and society,” he said.

Apart from congratulating the recipients of the awards, he hoped they would continue to strive for excellence in their studies and future endeavors.

He added that other than acquiring knowledge, they should strive for a good balance with extra-curricular activities and master essential soft skills, cultivate cultural ethics and honesty.
