KUCHING: Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii was checking on the level of compliance of the smoking ban at eateries in Carpenter Street here yesterday.

Dr Kelvin, who was accompanied by Padungan assemblyman Wong King Wei, also took the opportunity to help put up the ‘No Smoking’ sign at several premises.

In line with the government’s directive through the Health Ministry, smoking is prohibited in all eateries throughout the country effective Jan 1.

For Sarawak, however, the directive was officially enforced effective yesterday after the amendment to the state’s Local Government by-laws.

Based on the ‘No Smoking’ directive, a smoker is only allowed to smoke about three metres away from where food or drink is served.
