Kuching Sikhs celebrate 550th anniversary of founder of Sikhism

KUCHING: The Sikh community here will join Sikhs around the world in celebrating the 550th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji on Nov 12.

Guru Nanak was the first of the 10 Sikh Gurus and the founder of the Sikh faith. Sarawak Sikh Temple Association president Dr Kalwinder Singh Khaira said to mark the occasion, the community here started a three-day prayer function beginning yesterday at the Kuching Sikh Temple.

The prayer sessions will last till 12 noon on Sunday.

Prayers will also be conducted on the morning of Nov 12 (Tuesday) at the same venue.

Dr Kalwinder said vegetarian food will be served to devotees and well-wishers.

Guru Nanak was born in 1469 at Nankana Sahib, Punjab which lies in present day Pakistan.

Dr Kalwinder said the three main teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji are “Kirat Karni” which is to always live an honest life and earn through honest labour, “Naam Japna” which is to always remember god in everything that one does and “Vand Chakna” which is to always share one’s earnings with the less fortunate.

“These three principles are among the pillars on which Sikhism is based. Guru Nanak also travelled widely in his lifetime to spread the message of piety, equality and fraternity amongst humanity,” he added.
