LABUAN: A group of local authorities under Labuan Corporation (LC) yesterday made an official visit to Labuan Liberty Wharf, the island’s sole containerised port.

The visit led by its chairman Datuk Seri Amir Hussien and chief executive officer Datuk Azhar Ahmad was to gain first hand knowledge on the port’s overall operations including its transhipment activities.

A briefing on the early history, development and cargo handling of Labuan Liberty Wharf was presented by port operator, Labuan Liberty Port Management Sdn Bhd (LLPM) chief executive officer Datuk Seri Mohd Alias Abd Rahman.

He said the handling of cargo from the ships to the trucks is handled wholly by the ship crews and not by the port operation staff.

“As most of the ships berthing at our port has their own cranes, the cargoes will be unloaded by the ship crews.

“As such, the speed of the cargo handling depends very much on efficiency of the ship crane operators, and our job is to transport the containers to the yard,” he said.

Alias said the port operator currently under Labuan Port Authority (LPA) is striving to further improve the efficiency of the port service provider to boost Labuan’s economy.

A major portion of the port cargoes is oil and gas materials, with only 30 per cent comprising consumer products. –Bernama
