LABUAN: Excitement is running high among Labuan’s rugby girl players as Malaysia Rugby Union announces its formidable line-up of rugby players set to represent the nation in the upcoming Asia Rugby U20 Girls Championship 2023 in Kathmandu, Nepal from August 17 to 24.

Labuan Rugby Association (LRA) president Rashid Adlie said the association had been entrusted to line up Malaysia’s rugby girl players for the championship.

“Of the 15 players, 10 players are from Labuan, two each from Terengganu and Sarawak, and one from Selangor.

“With a roster filled with talent and experience, the nation’s rugby team aims to dominate the regional tournament and bring home the prestigious title,” he said to Bernama today.

The prestigious Asia Rugby U20 Girls Championship will witness Malaysia’s rugby team showcasing their skills and sportsmanship against other formidable opponents from the Asian region.

Rashid who had been appointed as manager for the nation’s U20 girl squad said the selection process for the national squad was rigorous, with the country’s finest athletes vying for a spot on the team.

“These athletes have demonstrated incredible dedication, skill, and teamwork throughout the selection process…I have full confidence in their abilities to compete at the highest level and make our country proud,” Rashid said.

He said with just a few weeks remaining until the games kick off, the athletes will have a centralised training in Labuan next week as preparation to showcase their prowess on the rugby field.

Leading the charge is the indomitable Captain Zaryssa Awang Daniel, and Mary Teresa (substitute captain), both from Labuan, who had been a driving force behind Labuan’s recent rugby success.

Joining them are the electrifying winger, Siti Shamimi and Nur Alyia Nabilla from Terengganu, known for their lightning-fast speed and elusive running.

Rashid said their ability to break through tough defensive lines has made the duo a crowd favourite and a constant threat to rival teams. – BERNAMA
