MIRI: The Northern Region Water Board (Laku) is looking for some state land to provide affordable houses and other associated facilities for its growing number of employees.

This was among the proposals forwarded by Laku Management chairman Datuk Nelson Balang Rining to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg during the earth breaking ceremony of the Laku Head Office here today.

“Our mission is to develop Laku not only as place for work but also a place we can call home,” he said.

Balang explained that Laku had grown exponentially both in terms of service and number of employees over the years.

“When Laku started in 1996, we had a total of 268 employees, consisting of 138 in Miri, 88 in Bintulu, 40 in Limbang and two from Corporate Office. Today, we have a total of 430 employees, of whom 154 are in Miri, 155 in Bintulu and Samalaju, 65 in Limbang and 56 in Corporate,” he pointed out.

Balang said over the years, Laku had implemented various projects to meet the increasing water demand in the northern region.

“We are grateful that the state government has approved funding for a number of projects such as the raw water transfer project from Batang Baram to Sungai Liku, the new Bukit Selatan Service Reservoir in Miri which will be officially handed over to Laku later, the 800mm pipeline from Nyabau Water Treatment Plant to Kidurong, the pipeline from Assyakirin Dam to the Sebiew intake, the 600mm pipeline from Kemena Bridge to the IKM junction, the Berawan Water Treatment Plant upgrading and Limbang new raw water intake and its associated works.

“We are very grateful to the Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) for assisting us in implementing these projects.

“We have also digitalised our operational and administrative activities including our Customer Relation Management System, Billing System, NRW Monitoring System, GIS Mapping, Asset Management System, and HR payroll system. All these projects aim to provide the best possible services to the public,” Balang said.
