SIBU: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidate for Lanang, Wong Ching Yong, has pledged to donate his MP salary to five Chinese Independent Schools here if he wins in the general election (GE15).

“I will donate all my MP salaries of RM16,000 per month for five years to all five Chinese Independent Schools even though the State government is giving quite a big sum every year to these schools” he said in a press conference on Friday (Nov 11).

The SUPP Dudong branch chief pointed out that the money would be for the welfare of teachers and staff in the five schools namely Catholic High School, Wong Nai Siong Secondary School, Guang Ming Secondary School, Citizen Middle School and Kiong Hing Secondary School.

“I will open a separate account to deposit all of my MP salaries and every year before the Chinese New Year, I will donate the money to the five schools,” he said, adding that the pledge is part of his election manifesto.

“I have met with the chairman of the Chinese Independent Schools Board of Directors Temenggong Datuk Vincent Lau and he said he fully supports my pledge,” he said.

Meanwhile in the same press conference, Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) chairman, Sempurai Petrus Ngelai said the site for a Bukit Tunggal Community and Cultural Centre costing RM15.6 million for Durin has been approved by the council.

According to Sempurai the project consists of a Pasar Tamu, a food stall, a public latrine and a car park.

“The centre will help stimulate the local economy in Durin thereby benefiting the people who are mostly Dayak.

“This project is very relevant as we don’t have such facility at the other side of Durin. There will also be a centre for youths for their activities,” he said.

According to Sempurai, the proposed project was mooted by Wong two years ago after he was sworn in as deputy chairman of the council.

“Nobody has brought this project up in parliament. So, Wong came in at the right time. So, we should give him a chance of five years. I know his work ethic. To me, he is a leader that we should have,” he said.

Wong explained to reporters about the proposed project.
