Landowners briefed on telco initiative

SARIKEI: The Sarawak government through the ‘Sarawak Multimedia Authority Rural Telecommunication Tower’ (SMART) initiative needs an estimated 700 telecommunication towers.

This will help to ensure that the people in the state have access to the network and have internet access which forms the basis of the digital economy.

According to a news report from Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), the government is also committed to building SMART towers to enable mobile service providers such as Celcom, Digi, Maxis, U Mobile and MySRBN-SDEC to offer broadband services.

This is to enable 93.6 per cent of the population of Sarawak is expected to have access to broadband by the end of 2023.

In addition, those living in rural locations can also access the internet using the same broadband as residents in urban areas.

In this regard, a briefing and discussion session with Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), elected representatives, community leaders and tribal leaders, as well as longhouse chiefs was held at the Sarikei Innovation Centre (SIC) yesterday.

The briefing aimed to explain to landowners the initiatives to be implemented to avoid any conflicts that will affect and delay the implementation of the project.

Meradong assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hing, Meluan assemblyman Rolland Duat Jubin, Kuala Rajang assemblyman Baijuri Jauji, representative of Repok assemblyman Anthony Tan, Daro assemblyman Mohd Azmeer and some other officials were present.
