Landslides force residents to evacuate longhouses

KANOWIT: Residents of Rh Jelai and Rh Berawang in Nanga Tada here, have been instructed to vacate their homes after landslides occurred behind the longhouse last night.

Kanowit fire chief Arrahman Chik said no injuries or casualties were reported.

He said his station initially received an emergency call around 8.40 pm on Saturday (Feb 4) pertaining to landslides in Nanga Tada area.

Following that, his men were despatched to the scene this morning, some 71 km from the station, to monitor the situation at three locations – Rh Jelai, Rh Berawang and Rh Engkamat.

“At the first two locations, the team found that the landslides occurred behind the kitchen areas of 11 doors (eight in Jelai and three in Berawang).

“The incident had caused damages to the residents’ crops and livestock,” he said.

Arrahman said the residents of the affected doors in Rh Jelai and Rh Berawang were told to immediately vacate their homes as they are at risk of collapsing.

The team also installed fences around the affected areas to prevent the residents from going near the scene.

Meanwhile, at the third location in Rh Engkamat, the team confirmed that a soil erosion occurred at a drain near the longhouse and Sarawak Energy quarters.

After ensuring that the situation is safe, the team departed back to their stations.

So far the authorities have not disclosed the exact number of residents affected by the landslides.
