KUCHING: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap has officiated at the Lantern Design Competition 2023, which aimed to promote Chinese traditions and culture among the younger generation so that Chinese heritage might be shared with people of other races.

The event was held at Farley Mall, Mile 6 today in conjunction with the Mid-Autumn Festival activities hosted by Welfare Association Chuang Yi Sarawak.

Forty-eight students from schools in the Mile 7 area took part in the competition which was divided into two groups of students (primary one to three, and primary four to six).

During his speech, Yap encouraged the organisation to hold more events of similar sort, which would help to strengthen unity among Sarawak’s multicultural and multilingual population.

“Unity is critical for political stability and is the key to Sarawak’s future prosperity and development. Any leadership will find it difficult to carry out initiatives for economic development and advancement if the citizens are not united,” he said.

Yap also reminded the audience that as “anak” Sarawak, they must all continue to support the fair, moderate and visionary economic policies of the current Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Sarawak government under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said the good track record of the current GPS government was reflected in its digital and hydrogen initiatives and sustainable development goals towards 2030 under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

Temenggong Datuk Tan Joo Phoi was also present at the event.
